THE SPRING WHERE WINNIE MET JESSE

8-28-18: Winne’s feelings about the Tucks-

In the novel Tuck Everlasting, Winnie, the main character, has met part of the Tuck family, Jesse, Miles and May. These three had a horrible secret, a secret that was never meant to be revealed. Winnie at first, after being told the story, had been thinking, pensive, that, all her life she has not ever believed in fairy tales and anything fantastic, but she felt as if the Tucks have sparked a story that seems impossible, yet seems so true, she had thought, “So now she sat, mouth opened, wide-eyed, not knowing what to make of this extraordinary story” (Pg. 42, Natalie Babbitt, 2007). Throughout the chapter, Winne had an emotional roller coaster. She felt many different emotions in such a short amount of time, but when they said they were taking Winnie to their cottage, something that is very terrifying. She felt as if they were no harm, that she had nothing to worry about, that they seemed friendly; safe, Winnie had this thought in her head, “She felt there was nothing to be afraid of, not really. For they seemed gentle. Gentle and-in a strange way-childlike” (pg. 44, Natalie Babbitt, 2007). Lastly, the Tuck’s helped Winnie lose her sense of fear and terror, and actually began to change her mind that the world was actually a cruel and unforgiving. As she was standing up, ready to leave, she thought, “She was running away after all, but she was not alone. Closing the gate on her oldest fears as she had closed the gates of her own fenced yard, she discovered the wings she’d always wished she had. And all at once she was elated” (Pg. 44-45, Natalie Babbitt, 2007).

Winnie is fearless. She has been proving that she was the bravest. That no matter the danger of the task, she was up to do it. Unlike Winnie, I am a coward, meaning that I could never relate to Winnie in this situation. In any circumstance where something terrifying is happening, I run away from it. In this circumstance, at first I would definitely doubt them, I would never trust strangers, especially because so many twist the truth to get what they want. May I just add that if, not only, I don’t know if they are telling the truth, but also they want to take me to their house to help them keep a secret, I would bolt. I will run away, far away where strangers are not trying to abduct me for trying to keep a secret, I already said I was going to keep it, why take me to your house!? Lastly, Winnie has shown that she can deal with her emotions, and feel when people are trustworthy or not, I, on the other hand, cannot. I would always be scared of them, I will not trust them with my life, I would be hesitant and afraid, I don’t know what is going to happen, and I don’t rust my life with the hands of these people. In conclusion, Winnie felt a roller coaster of emotions when she met the Tuck’s, and I am probably the polar opposite of Winnie in circumstances where I am under pressure.
